About this ingredient
Iron porphyrin, essentially heme iron, is iron held within a porphyrin ring rather than as an inorganic salt. It is absorbed by a different route from inorganic iron, and that route is not blocked by phytate, calcium or tannins in the diet.
The practical consequence is better absorption at lower inclusion, with less free iron left in the gut to catalyse oxidation or feed pathogens. It is used chiefly in piglets, where anaemia at weaning is a persistent problem.
