About this ingredient
Hydrolyzed feather meal is a yellow granular or powdered protein produced under high temperature and pressure for more than five hours. The extended hydrolysis breaks the disulfide bonds in the feather keratin completely, converting the fibre into smaller protein subunits and linear peptide chains that animals digest readily.
Because hydrolysis is complete rather than partial, the product avoids the poor digestibility that gives cheaper feather meals a bad reputation. Amino acid damage during processing is limited, quality is stable, and the material is sterile, salt-free and non-deliquescent, with good palatability and flow through mixing equipment.
It is used in pig, poultry and aquaculture feeds to reduce inclusion of soybean meal, fish meal, chicken meal and pork meal, and carries pig digestible energy of 3,200 kcal/kg and metabolisable energy of 2,900 kcal/kg.

Formulation note
Feather meal is limiting in lysine and histidine. Formulate alongside a lysine-rich source or supplement synthetic lysine to keep the amino acid profile balanced.
