About this ingredient

Rapeseed meal is the residue after oil extraction from rapeseed or canola. It carries a useful amino acid balance, with methionine relatively strong compared with soybean meal, which can reduce synthetic methionine supplementation.

Glucosinolate level separates ordinary rapeseed meal from low glucosinolate canola grades, and it is the figure that decides how much you can safely include, particularly in poultry. Fibre is also higher than soybean meal, which constrains inclusion in energy dense diets.

Where it is used

  • Dairy and beef rations
  • Poultry and swine diets at controlled inclusion
  • Aqua feed, in species tolerant of higher fibre

Formulation note

Choose the grade by glucosinolate content, especially for poultry. Rapeseed meal can replace part of the soybean meal in ruminant diets at higher levels than in poultry and pig diets.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between rapeseed meal and canola meal?

Canola is a low glucosinolate, low erucic acid variety of rapeseed. Standard rapeseed meal can contain more glucosinolates, which limits inclusion.

Why are glucosinolates important?

High glucosinolates can reduce feed intake and affect thyroid function, especially in poultry and pigs.

What protein content does rapeseed meal have?

It typically contains around 34 to 38 percent protein. The exact figure is confirmed on the certificate of analysis.
