About this ingredient

FIBRE · ILLUSTRATION, NOT A LOT PHOTOGRAPH

Wheat bran is the outer layer of the wheat kernel, separated during milling. It is a fibre and bulk source rather than an energy source, valued for gut fill, transit and palatability.

Bulk density is the practical constraint. Loose bran fills a container by volume long before it reaches the weight a dense meal would, so a landed cost calculation that assumes a flat tonnage per box will be wrong. Pelleted bran closes most of that gap and is worth quoting alongside.

Where it is used

  • Dairy and beef rations, for effective fibre
  • Layer diets, for gut fill and transit
  • Horse feed
  • Carrier for premixes and molasses

Formulation note

Always confirm the container loading weight for wheat bran, and consider pelleted bran to reduce freight cost per tonne. Check moisture and mycotoxins on the certificate.

Frequently asked questions

What is wheat bran used for in animal feed?

It provides fibre, bulk and palatability in dairy, layer and horse diets, and is used as a carrier in premixes.

Why is pelleted wheat bran cheaper to ship?

Loose bran fills a container by volume before reaching full weight. Pellets are denser, so more tonnes fit in each container.

What mycotoxins should be tested in wheat bran?

Vomitoxin (DON) and zearalenone are the main risks for wheat products, along with aflatoxin in warm climates.
