Isomaltooligosaccharide is a prebiotic carbohydrate that resists digestion in the small intestine and is fermented by beneficial bacteria in the large intestine, particularly bifidobacteria.

That fermentation produces short chain fatty acids which feed the gut wall and lower luminal pH, making conditions less hospitable to pathogens. It is used within gut health programmes, frequently alongside a probiotic.

Where it is used

  • Gut health programmes in poultry and swine
  • Piglet diets around weaning
  • Pet food, for digestive support
  • Synbiotic combinations with probiotics

Formulation note

Isomaltooligosaccharide works best as part of a gut health programme, often paired with a probiotic. Compare products on oligosaccharide purity, since lower grades carry more simple sugars.

Frequently asked questions

What is isomaltooligosaccharide (IMO)?

It is a prebiotic carbohydrate that escapes digestion in the small intestine and is fermented by beneficial bacteria in the large intestine.

How does IMO improve gut health?

Fermentation of IMO produces short chain fatty acids, which nourish the gut wall and lower pH, making conditions less favourable for pathogens.

What purity should I ask for?

Ask for total IMO content on the certificate. Higher purity grades contain less glucose and maltose.

Tell us the product, the tonnage and the port

Send those three things and we come back with a delivered price, a full specification and a recent certificate of analysis. Usually the same working day.
