Betaine does two jobs at once. As a methyl donor it can spare part of the methionine and choline requirement, and as an organic osmolyte it helps cells hold water under heat and osmotic stress.

That second function is why it appears in hot climate poultry programmes and in shrimp and fish diets. It is supplied as anhydrous betaine or as betaine hydrochloride, which differ in concentration and in how they behave with other premix components.

Where it is used

  • Poultry diets under heat stress
  • Methionine and choline sparing in least cost formulation
  • Shrimp and fish diets, as an osmolyte and attractant
  • Swine diets, for carcass leanness

Formulation note

Decide first whether you are buying betaine for methyl donation or for osmotic protection, because that sets the inclusion. Anhydrous betaine and betaine hydrochloride differ in concentration, so compare them on active betaine content.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between anhydrous betaine and betaine hydrochloride?

Anhydrous betaine is the pure compound, while betaine hydrochloride carries a hydrochloride fraction and so contains less betaine per kilogram. It is also acidic, which affects how it behaves in a premix.

Can betaine replace methionine or choline?

It can spare part of the methionine and choline used as methyl donors, but it cannot replace methionine's role as an amino acid in protein. Your nutritionist should set the replacement value.

Why is betaine used in hot climates?

As an osmolyte it helps cells hold water under heat stress, which is why it appears in broiler and layer programmes in hot regions.
