About this ingredient

FIBRE · ILLUSTRATION, NOT A LOT PHOTOGRAPH

Bamboo powder is a concentrated insoluble lignocellulose fibre milled from bamboo. It is used at low inclusion where a highly concentrated, very pale, neutral fibre is needed without diluting the rest of the formulation.

Because it is largely indigestible it contributes structure and transit rather than energy, and its high fibre concentration means a little goes a long way compared with a bran.

Where it is used

  • Pet food, for stool quality and hairball control
  • Swine and poultry diets, at low inclusion
  • Formulations where fibre is needed without added colour

Formulation note

Bamboo powder is a concentrated insoluble fibre, so it is used at low inclusion. Specify the particle size you need, because fine and coarse grades behave differently in extrusion and in stool quality applications.

Frequently asked questions

What is bamboo powder used for in pet food?

It is used as a pale, neutral insoluble fibre for stool quality and hairball control, at low inclusion because it is highly concentrated.

Does bamboo powder provide energy?

Very little. It is largely indigestible lignocellulose, so it contributes structure and gut transit rather than nutrients.

How does bamboo powder compare with wheat bran?

It is far more concentrated in fibre and much paler, so a small amount does the job of a larger bran inclusion without diluting energy or changing colour.
