Benzoic acid is an organic acid used mainly in swine feed, where it lowers gastric and urinary pH. The gastric effect improves protein digestion and suppresses pathogens around weaning; the urinary effect reduces ammonia release from slurry.

It is corrosive to some mill equipment and has a distinct odour, so handling and dosing equipment need checking before a first order. It is often used alongside other organic acids rather than alone.

Where it is used

  • Piglet diets around weaning
  • Grower and finisher swine, for slurry ammonia control
  • Acidifier blends
  • Urinary pH management in breeding stock

Formulation note

Benzoic acid is often used in combination with other organic acids. Check your mill's dosing and handling equipment before the first order, because the acid is corrosive to some metals and has a strong odour.

Frequently asked questions

Why is benzoic acid used in pig feed?

It lowers gastric pH, which supports protein digestion and pathogen control around weaning, and lowers urinary pH, which reduces ammonia release from slurry.

Is benzoic acid safe to handle in a feed mill?

It needs normal chemical handling care. It can irritate skin and eyes and can corrode some equipment, so staff should use protective equipment and dosing systems should be checked.

Is benzoic acid approved as a feed additive?

It is authorised for swine in several markets, with limits by species and age. Confirm the permitted use and maximum level in your country before ordering.
