About this ingredient

Calcium chloride is used in ruminant nutrition mainly as an anionic salt. In the weeks before calving it lowers the dietary cation anion difference, which primes calcium mobilisation and reduces the incidence of milk fever.

It is unpalatable and strongly hygroscopic, so it is normally used within a formulated anionic blend rather than fed straight. It also serves as a calcium source and, in aquaculture, for adjusting water hardness.

Where it is used

  • Transition and close-up dry cow rations
  • Anionic salt blends for milk fever prevention
  • Calcium supplementation
  • Aquaculture water hardness adjustment

Formulation note

Calcium chloride is normally used as part of a formulated anionic salt blend in the close up period, with urine pH monitoring to confirm the diet is working. It is unpalatable, so it is rarely fed on its own.

Frequently asked questions

How does calcium chloride help prevent milk fever?

It lowers the dietary cation anion difference before calving, which helps the cow mobilise calcium when milk production starts, reducing the risk of milk fever.

Why is calcium chloride hard to feed?

It is unpalatable and strongly hygroscopic, so it is usually mixed into an anionic blend or total mixed ration rather than offered directly.

What should I check on the specification?

Check the calcium chloride content, the form supplied, moisture and heavy metal limits on the certificate of analysis.

Tell us the product, the tonnage and the port

Send those three things and we come back with a delivered price, a full specification and a recent certificate of analysis. Usually the same working day.
