Capsaicin is the pungent active of chilli. In feed it is used at very low inclusion to stimulate feed intake, increase digestive secretions and improve blood flow to the gut wall.

Birds are insensitive to its pungency, which is why it can be used in poultry at levels that would deter a mammal. It is normally supplied encapsulated so that it releases in the gut rather than affecting palatability at the feeder.

Where it is used

  • Feed intake stimulation in poultry
  • Gut health and circulation support
  • Phytogenic blends
  • Piglet diets, in protected form

Formulation note

Capsaicin is used at very low inclusion and is usually supplied encapsulated. Confirm the active content and the protection system, since those decide both effect and palatability.

Frequently asked questions

Why can poultry eat capsaicin?

Birds lack the receptor sensitivity that makes capsaicin pungent to mammals, so levels that would deter a pig are well tolerated by poultry.

What does capsaicin do in feed?

It stimulates feed intake and digestive secretions and supports blood flow to the gut wall.

Why is capsaicin encapsulated?

Encapsulation stops it affecting palatability at the feeder and releases it in the gut, which is especially important in pig diets.
