Chilli meal is milled from dried chilli fruit and its by-products, and is used in feed both as a natural pigment source and for the digestive effects of its capsaicinoids.

The red carotenoid fraction contributes to skin and yolk pigmentation in poultry, while the pungent fraction stimulates feed intake and digestive secretion. Birds are insensitive to the pungency, which is why inclusion levels that would deter a mammal are workable in poultry.

Where it is used

  • Layer and broiler diets, for natural pigmentation
  • Feed intake stimulation in poultry
  • Phytogenic blends
  • Aqua feed, for pigmentation

Formulation note

If you are buying chilli meal for pigmentation, ask for the red carotenoid content rather than relying on colour alone. If the aim is intake stimulation, ask for the capsaicinoid level.

Frequently asked questions

Is chilli meal used for egg yolk colour?

Yes. Its red carotenoids contribute to yolk and skin pigmentation in poultry, often alongside a yellow pigment source.

Can chilli meal be used in pig feed?

Pigs are sensitive to its pungency, so inclusion is limited. It is mainly used in poultry and aqua feed.

What should the certificate show?

Moisture, carotenoid or colour value, capsaicinoid content where relevant, and mycotoxin results, particularly aflatoxin.
