About this ingredient

PLANT PROTEIN · ILLUSTRATION, NOT A LOT PHOTOGRAPH

Corn gluten meal is the concentrated protein fraction left after starch and germ are separated in wet milling. It is one of the densest plant proteins in common use, and it carries a high level of xanthophyll, the pigment that drives yolk colour in layers and skin colour in broilers.

It is low in lysine relative to its crude protein, so it complements soybean meal rather than replacing it. Formulators generally cap inclusion and balance with a lysine source. Ask for the xanthophyll figure alongside protein, because for most layer producers that pigment is half the reason they are buying it.

Where it is used

  • Layer diets, where yolk pigmentation is priced
  • Broiler finisher diets for skin colour
  • Pet food, as a concentrated plant protein
  • Aqua feed, where pigment and protein are both wanted

Formulation note

Corn gluten meal is normally included at moderate levels and balanced with lysine. When it is being bought for layer pigmentation, set the formulation target on xanthophyll as well as protein.

Frequently asked questions

Why is corn gluten meal used in layer feed?

It combines dense protein with a high xanthophyll content, the yellow pigment that drives egg yolk colour.

Can corn gluten meal replace soybean meal?

Not fully. It is low in lysine relative to its protein, so it complements soybean meal rather than replacing it.

What should the certificate of analysis include?

Crude protein, moisture, xanthophyll, and mycotoxin results, particularly aflatoxin and zearalenone.
