About this ingredient

PLANT PROTEIN · ILLUSTRATION, NOT A LOT PHOTOGRAPH

Corn middlings are the fine particles of bran, germ and endosperm separated during dry milling. They sit between a grain and a fibre source, carrying moderate protein with useful digestible energy.

Because the fraction varies with the mill and the setting, bulk density and fibre move more than they do for a commodity meal. That matters for container loading as much as for formulation, so confirm the loading rate before you calculate landed cost.

Where it is used

  • Swine grower and finisher diets
  • Dairy rations, as a fibre and energy source
  • Pelleted feed, where binding characteristics help

Formulation note

Because corn middlings vary with the mill, ask for protein, fibre and bulk density on the certificate. Use them to replace part of the maize and bran in grower and finisher diets rather than as a protein source.

Which animals are corn middlings fed to?

They are mainly used in swine grower and finisher diets and in dairy rations as a fibre and energy source.

Are corn middlings good for pelleting?

Yes. Their binding characteristics can help pellet quality in compound feed.
