About this ingredient
Cottonseed meal is the protein fraction remaining after oil extraction from cotton seed. It is a well established ruminant protein and a cost effective partial substitute for soybean meal where price spreads justify it.
The figure that governs its use is free gossypol. Ruminants tolerate it far better than monogastrics, which is why inclusion in poultry and swine is limited and in young stock more limited still. Ask for the free gossypol result on the certificate, not just the total, and tell us the species so we can match the grade.
