Hydroxylated vitamin D3 metabolites bypass part of the conversion the liver and kidney normally perform on ordinary cholecalciferol. That matters most when the animal is young, growing very fast, or under a challenge that impairs that conversion.

In practice it is used in broilers for skeletal development and leg strength, and in layers for shell quality in late lay. It is used alongside conventional D3 rather than replacing it entirely, and inclusion is governed by regulatory limits in most markets.

Where it is used

  • Broiler diets, for skeletal development and leg health
  • Layer diets, for shell quality in late lay
  • Breeder nutrition
  • Swine diets, for bone integrity

Formulation note

Use hydroxylated vitamin D3 alongside conventional D3, within your market's legal limits. The benefit is largest in fast growing broilers and in layers towards the end of lay.

Frequently asked questions

How is hydroxylated vitamin D3 different from normal vitamin D3?

It has already been converted in part of the metabolic pathway that normally happens in the liver, so the animal can use it more quickly and reliably.

Which animals benefit most?

Fast growing broilers for skeletal development and leg health, layers for shell quality late in lay, breeders, and swine for bone integrity.

Does it replace vitamin D3 in the premix?

Usually not entirely. It is used together with conventional D3, and the combined level must stay within local regulatory limits.
