A feed emulsifier is a surfactant, most often a lysophospholipid or a polyethylene glycol ester, that improves the emulsification of dietary fat so it can be absorbed more completely.

The benefit is largest exactly where natural emulsification is weakest: in young birds and piglets whose bile production is still developing, and in diets carrying cheaper, more saturated fats. It allows a formulation to be reduced in energy while holding performance, which is where the cost saving comes from.

Where it is used

  • Broiler diets, to improve fat digestibility
  • Piglet diets, where bile production is limited
  • Energy reduced least cost formulation
  • Aqua feed with high lipid inclusion

Formulation note

The usual approach is to use the emulsifier to reduce dietary energy slightly while holding performance, which is where the cost saving comes from. Confirm the active type, such as lysophospholipids or glycerol polyethylene glycol ricinoleate, when comparing products.

Frequently asked questions

What does a feed emulsifier do?

It helps dietary fat form smaller droplets so it can be digested and absorbed more completely, improving energy use from fats and oils.

Which diets benefit most from an emulsifier?

Young broilers and piglets, whose bile production is still developing, and diets using cheaper or more saturated fats.

How does an emulsifier save cost?

Better fat digestion lets the formulator reduce energy or fat in the diet while holding performance.
