ANIMAL PROTEIN · ILLUSTRATION, NOT A LOT PHOTOGRAPH

Fish meal is a concentrated marine protein produced by cooking, pressing and drying whole fish or fish trimmings. It remains the reference protein for aquaculture and for young animal diets because of its amino acid balance, palatability and digestibility.

Two things separate a good lot from a cheap one. Steam drying protects amino acid availability where flame drying can damage it, and total volatile nitrogen indicates how fresh the raw fish was at processing. Ask for both, along with the antioxidant treatment, because untreated meal can self heat in a container on a long sailing.

Where it is used

  • Aqua feed and shrimp diets
  • Piglet and poultry starter diets
  • Pet food, as a palatant and protein source
  • Breeder diets

Formulation note

Specify protein grade, drying method, TVN and histamine, and require antioxidant treatment for shipping. For shrimp and starter diets, steam dried meal with low TVN is worth its premium.

Frequently asked questions

What protein grades of fish meal are available?

Fish meal is traded in grades by protein, commonly from about 55 to 68 percent. We quote the grade and confirm protein on the certificate of analysis.

What is TVN in fish meal?

Total volatile nitrogen shows how fresh the raw fish was at processing. Lower TVN means fresher raw material and better quality meal.

Why must fish meal be treated with antioxidant for shipping?

Untreated fish meal can oxidise and self heat in a container. Antioxidant treatment such as ethoxyquin or natural alternatives is required by shipping rules and some import regulations.
