BACTERIAL PROTEIN · ILLUSTRATION, NOT A LOT PHOTOGRAPH

This is the protein rich residue recovered from monosodium glutamate fermentation. Once the glutamate is extracted, what remains is bacterial cell mass together with residual fermentation solids, dried for feed use.

It is a fermentation co-product rather than a purpose grown protein, which is what makes it cost effective. It carries B vitamins and a useful amino acid profile, and inclusion is usually capped because of the nucleic acid and mineral load.

Where it is used

  • Ruminant rations
  • Aqua feed at controlled inclusion
  • Swine diets
  • Blending in compound feed

Formulation note

Buy glutamate residue protein on cost per unit of protein and cap inclusion because of nucleic acid and ash content. Check salt and ash on each certificate, since they vary with the fermentation process.

Frequently asked questions

What is glutamate residue protein?

It is the dried protein rich residue left after monosodium glutamate is extracted from fermentation, mostly bacterial cell mass and fermentation solids.

Is glutamate residue protein a cheap protein source?

It is usually cost effective because it is a co-product, which is why it is bought on price per unit of protein.

Why is inclusion limited?

Nucleic acid and mineral content limit how much can be used, particularly in monogastric diets.
