ADDITIVES · ILLUSTRATION, NOT A LOT PHOTOGRAPH

Lemon oil is a citrus essential oil dominated by limonene. In feed it is used as a palatant and aroma component, and for the mild antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of its terpene fraction.

It is highly volatile, so unprotected oil largely evaporates during pelleting. Encapsulated or adsorbed forms are what survive to reach the animal, and that is the specification point worth confirming.

Where it is used

  • Palatability and aroma in compound feed
  • Phytogenic blends
  • Pet food flavour systems
  • Antioxidant support in high fat feed

Formulation note

Use a protected or adsorbed form of lemon oil in pelleted feed, and liquid oil only where it is added after heat treatment. Buy on limonene content and aroma consistency.
