Magnesium oxide is the standard supplemental magnesium source and doubles as a rumen buffer. In dairy cattle it is used to prevent grass tetany on lush spring pasture and to stabilise rumen pH in high concentrate rations.

Reactivity, not just magnesium content, determines how well it performs as a buffer, and reactivity depends on calcination. Two products with the same assay can behave differently in the rumen, so ask about reactivity if buffering is the reason you are buying.

Where it is used

  • Dairy rations, as a rumen buffer
  • Grass tetany prevention on spring pasture
  • Mineral premixes
  • Poultry and swine magnesium supplementation

Formulation note

If you are buying magnesium oxide as a rumen buffer, specify reactivity as well as magnesium content. For mineral premix use, magnesium content, particle size and heavy metals are the main checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is magnesium oxide used for in dairy cattle?

It is used to supply magnesium, prevent grass tetany on lush pasture and help buffer rumen pH in high concentrate rations.

Why does reactivity matter?

Reactivity reflects how the oxide was calcined and how quickly it dissolves. Two products with the same magnesium content can behave very differently as rumen buffers.

What magnesium content does feed grade magnesium oxide have?

Feed grade products usually contain around 50 to 58 percent magnesium. The exact figure is confirmed on the certificate of analysis.

Tell us the product, the tonnage and the port

Send those three things and we come back with a delivered price, a full specification and a recent certificate of analysis. Usually the same working day.
