Potassium sorbate is a mould and yeast inhibitor. In feed it protects finished product, moist feed and raw materials held at risk moisture from spoilage and from the mycotoxin production that follows fungal growth.

It is more soluble and easier to apply than sorbic acid itself, and it is effective against a broad range of fungi while being relatively inactive against bacteria. It is most often used within a preservative blend rather than alone.

Where it is used

  • Mould inhibition in finished feed
  • Moist and high moisture feed preservation
  • Raw material storage protection
  • Preservative blends

Formulation note

Potassium sorbate is a mould and yeast inhibitor, not an antibacterial. It is usually part of a preservative blend, and it cannot remove mycotoxins already present in raw materials.

Frequently asked questions

What does potassium sorbate do in feed?

It inhibits moulds and yeasts, protecting feed and raw materials from spoilage and from mycotoxin production that follows fungal growth.

Does potassium sorbate kill bacteria?

It has limited activity against bacteria. For bacterial control, other organic acids are used alongside it.

Why use potassium sorbate instead of sorbic acid?

Potassium sorbate is more water soluble and easier to apply evenly.
