In ruminants, unprotected methionine is degraded by rumen microbes before it reaches the small intestine, so most of what you pay for is lost. Rumen protected methionine is coated or matrix bound so that it passes the rumen intact and releases in the abomasum.

It is used mainly in high yielding dairy cows, where metabolisable methionine supply limits milk protein output. The figures worth asking for are rumen bypass rate and intestinal availability, since a product can score well on one and poorly on the other.

Where it is used

  • High yielding dairy rations, for milk protein yield
  • Transition cow diets
  • Beef finishing, where amino acid supply limits gain

Formulation note

Compare rumen protected methionine on metabolisable methionine delivered, calculated from rumen bypass and intestinal release. Use it where your ration model shows methionine limiting milk protein.

Frequently asked questions

Why does methionine need rumen protection?

Rumen microbes break down unprotected methionine before it reaches the small intestine, so little of it is absorbed by the cow.

Which cows benefit from rumen protected methionine?

High yielding dairy cows and transition cows, where methionine supply limits milk protein production.

What figures should I compare between products?

Compare rumen bypass rate, intestinal digestibility and the resulting amount of absorbable methionine per dose.
