About this ingredient

PLANT PROTEIN · ILLUSTRATION, NOT A LOT PHOTOGRAPH

Okara is the insoluble residue left after soy milk or tofu production, and spray dried okara is that material stabilised into a storable powder. It carries useful residual protein along with a high level of insoluble fibre.

Drying is what makes it a tradeable commodity, since wet okara spoils within a day or two. It behaves as a fibre source with a protein contribution rather than as a protein meal, so it is not a substitute for soybean meal.

Where it is used

  • Swine diets, as a fibre source with residual protein
  • Ruminant rations
  • Pet food, for dietary fibre
  • Aqua feed at controlled inclusion

Formulation note

Treat spray okara as a fibre source with a protein contribution rather than as a replacement for soybean meal. Check protein, fibre and moisture on the certificate.

Frequently asked questions

What is okara?

Okara is the insoluble soybean residue left after making soy milk or tofu. Spray drying makes it stable and tradeable.

Can spray okara replace soybean meal?

No. It has less protein and more fibre, so it is used as a fibre source rather than a protein meal.

Why is okara spray dried?

Wet okara spoils within a day or two. Spray drying turns it into a storable powder suitable for shipping.
