Beet pulp is the fibrous residue left after sugar extraction from sugar beet, dried and pelleted for transport. Its fibre is highly digestible and rapidly fermentable, which makes it behave more like a slow energy source than a filler.

It is prized in dairy rations for supporting rumen function without the acidosis risk of adding starch, and in horse feed for the same reason. Pellets are usually soaked before feeding to horses. Molassed and unmolassed grades are different products, so specify which you want.

Where it is used

  • Dairy rations, as a digestible fibre source
  • Horse feed, soaked
  • Beef finishing diets, to moderate rumen acid load
  • Rabbit and small animal feed

Formulation note

Specify molassed or unmolassed pellets, and pellet size. In dairy rations beet pulp can replace part of the cereal to support rumen function, and for horses it is soaked before feeding.

Frequently asked questions

Why are beet pulp pellets used in dairy rations?

Their digestible, fermentable fibre supplies energy while supporting rumen function with less acidosis risk than starch.

Should beet pulp pellets be soaked for horses?

Yes. They are usually soaked before feeding horses to reduce the risk of choke and to soften the pellets.

What is the difference between molassed and unmolassed beet pulp?

Molassed beet pulp has molasses added back, raising sugar and palatability. Unmolassed pulp is lower in sugar.
