ADDITIVES · ILLUSTRATION, NOT A LOT PHOTOGRAPH

Thyme oil is a phytogenic feed additive whose activity comes chiefly from thymol and carvacrol. Both disrupt bacterial cell membranes, which gives the oil antimicrobial activity against common gut pathogens, alongside antioxidant effects.

Essential oils are volatile, so the form matters more than the raw concentration. Encapsulated or adsorbed products survive pelleting and release in the gut; unprotected oil largely does not. Ask how the product is protected and at what temperature it has been validated.

Where it is used

  • Antibiotic free poultry programmes
  • Coccidiosis and enteritis support in broilers
  • Piglet diets around weaning
  • Aqua feed

Formulation note

Buy thyme oil on thymol and carvacrol content, and use a protected form for pelleted feed. It is often used as part of a phytogenic blend in antibiotic free programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the active compounds in thyme oil?

Mainly thymol and carvacrol, which have antimicrobial and antioxidant effects.

Does thyme oil help against coccidiosis?

It is used to support gut health during coccidiosis and enteritis challenge, but it is not a replacement for an approved anticoccidial programme.

How should thyme oil be added to pelleted feed?

Use an encapsulated or adsorbed form that has been tested at your pelleting temperature, since unprotected oil evaporates.
