Vitamin D governs calcium and phosphorus absorption and their deposition into bone and eggshell. In housed animals with no meaningful sunlight exposure, dietary supply is the only supply, which is why it is universal in intensive production.

It is supplied as D3, cholecalciferol, in stabilised beadlet form. Poultry cannot use the D2 form efficiently, so D3 is the only practical choice in bird diets.

Where it is used

  • Layer diets, for shell quality
  • Broiler diets, for skeletal development
  • Swine and ruminant supplementation
  • Vitamin premixes

Formulation note

Use vitamin D3 in poultry diets, since birds use D2 poorly. Feed grade D3 is sold by activity, commonly 500,000 IU per gram, so compare offers on cost per million IU.

Frequently asked questions

Why is vitamin D3 used instead of D2 in poultry?

Poultry use vitamin D2 much less efficiently than D3, so D3 is the practical form for bird diets.

What strength is feed grade vitamin D3?

The common feed grade is 500,000 IU per gram in stabilised beadlet form.

What happens if layers lack vitamin D?

Calcium absorption falls, leading to poor shell quality and bone problems.
