Xylooligosaccharide is a prebiotic produced from the xylan fraction of plant fibre. It is notably effective at low inclusion compared with most prebiotics, which is its main commercial advantage.

It selectively feeds bifidobacteria, raises short chain fatty acid production and supports gut barrier integrity. In poultry it is used within antibiotic free programmes, often paired with a spore forming probiotic.

Where it is used

  • Antibiotic free poultry programmes
  • Piglet diets around weaning
  • Synbiotic combinations
  • Aqua feed and shrimp diets

Formulation note

Xylooligosaccharide is effective at low inclusion, so compare products on XOS purity and cost per gram of active. It pairs well with spore forming probiotics.

Frequently asked questions

What is xylooligosaccharide (XOS)?

XOS is a prebiotic made from the xylan fraction of plant fibre, such as corn cobs.

Why is XOS used at low inclusion?

It is very selective for beneficial bacteria, so small amounts give a useful response compared with many other prebiotics.

Can XOS be used with probiotics?

Yes. It is often combined with Bacillus probiotics in synbiotic programmes.
